On The Myth of “Work-Life Balance”
By Denise Lee Yohn
Work-life balance is a myth. At least, that’s what I’ve come to understand in my career of more than three decades. “Balance” suggests a static state—whereas life is constantly changing. And work is not the opposite of life; it isn’t separate. It’s an integral part of our day-to-day, or at least it should be.
Instead of trying to achieve work-life balance, I’ve pursued centeredness. I aim to put Jesus at the center of my life and then design and manage all the different aspects around that center. The truth is, Jesus is already at the center of everything—he is the Lord of all, the Alpha and Omega, the central figure in all of Scripture and of this world.
Here are a few practices that, by God’s grace and power, I use to orient my life around Jesus.
